So another external hard drive collapsed on me today. I don’t blame it to be honest, seeing as it got knocked of a table. Of course there was stuff on there that I’d rather I hadn’t lost but I guess the most important thing is my music collection - 5420, 18.65GB worth of, mp3s, which according to iTunes is approximately 12.2 days of music without repeats.
Seeing as I was just about to head to Leeds when this happened, I quickly grabbed some CDs from my large collection so I wasn’t completely music-less. Now, this is what I find most interesting as obviously given this scenario I’m gonna take my favourite CDs right? For the most part I reckon I did so here be a list of all the albums I’ve brought, and my thoughts on each one. Yay.
iMonster - Neveroddoreven
You’ve seen Shaun of the Dead, right? Or maybe even a Ford advert a while back? Well then chances are that you’ve already heard iMonster then. They’re an electronic duo from Sheffield playing around with samples and the like to create gorgeous chill-out tunes. Currently this is their only commercially available album, though they have said that there’ll be a new one out this year. It’s totally something everyone should hear. Also, I’ve brought their Christmas single too, which has a grand total of one track on it.
The Living End - Roll On
I couldn’t really say why I brought this one. I mean I like The Living End, don’t get me wrong, but it seems a bit out of place seeing as they’re far from my favourite band. It’s a good album, though given the chance I’d have brought their self-titled album as it has more of my favourite punk/rockabilly tunes of theirs on it, but I don’t own it at the moment. It’s definitely on my “to get” list though.
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot
Clearly my album of choice if I fancy a dance. There’s just something about swing music that makes me wanna boogie. Ok, so it’s not swing in the traditional sense, but a more modern take on it but that doesn’t stop it being full of really awesome tunes. I think what Mojo have done with this album is very sneaky because it’s supposedly a best of but what it really is, is a collection of their only swing tunes because in reality they’re more of a punk band, but I can’t say I mind because I only love them for their swing stuff.
The Hitchers - Tees Valley Deadbeats
Chances are, you won’t have heard of The Hitchers, but then why should you have? They’re not exactly prolific because they’re a local band from my home town, Middlesbrough. In fact, I went to the same primary school as their lead singer. This is their second album and whist their first album was good, this one is far superior with its catchy rockabilly tunes, three-part harmonies and swinging rhythms. I can’t recommend this album enough - it’s simply awesome.
Ginger - A Break In The Weather, Valor Del Corazon, Yoni, Market Harbour
Wildhearts - Ten Albums
Know me and know that I love Ginger, one of the most underrated, unrecognised, British songwriters. I have brought all of his studio albums with me because it’s impossible for me to pick a favourite. Actually, that a lie, my favourite is Yoni, but I guess what I’m saying is that they’re all so good that I don’t want to be without any of them. The same goes for The Wildhearts as I’ve brought the ten albums of theirs that I own, including Fishing for Luckies and Fishing for more Luckies.
Howling Willie - World of Filth
I’ve talked about Willie before. He’s essentially Ginger’s country alter-ego who is offensively hilarious. Not for the faint-hearted or the close-minded but damn, are there some catchy tunes.
Silver Ginger 5 - Black Leather Mojo (Expanded Edition)
A glam rock band featuring Ginger. Can you see where I’m going with this one? He likes girls cos girls are better than boys. I like Ginger cos he’s better than most other musicians.
Tim Minchin
Erm, if you don’t know why I took these then you don’t know me at all…
Anyway, I’m hoping for a recovery of my hard drive tonight, soon-ish so this whole thing might just end up being irrelevant. Oh well.
