So I’ve seen two films today - The Dark Knight and Lost Boys: The Tribe. I’ve also been shopping for glasses for Alick and odds and ends to help me customise a top of mine. Let’s run through them in chronological order.
Woke up late by about two hours. It seems the alarm function on my iPod isn’t loud enough for my liking but never mind, I just decided to head into town later than anticipated.
So first thing’s first, I headed to On:Spec to help Alick choose some frames as he’s never worn glasses before and has little idea of what suits him at all. He’s now got some lovely blue frames, or will do on Wednesday, just in time for our holiday to Edinburgh, which means he’ll be able to see the comedians this time instead of them just being blurs.
We then headed to Primark, which was strangely quiet, and I bought a few bits and pieces for customising things, though I did have one particular top in mind that I want to get done for Edinburgh as it’s gonna look awesome. I also bought a shirt dress type thing, which they seem to be taking the piss with. Despite the fact the dress fits nicely around the waist they’ve included a belt with it that’s ridiculously too big. One size does not fit all when you’re as small as me.
We then headed to the cinema and saw The Dark Knight and yes, I enjoyed it, Heath Ledger was good as The Joker, etc, etc but I really don’t feel like the world needs to hear my two cents on the film and besides, my Batman is Adam West’s Batman, not this alien, growling Batman. I don’t care if camp Batman was made over twenty years before I was born; he was the first one I saw and fell in love with especially with irresistible lines like “Holy bikini Batman!”
One thing that did bug me about the experience was not the actual film but one of the trailers, for the new Robert De Niro film, Righteous Kill. It’s almost as if someone saw what a hit the Dexter TV series was, changed a few facts (the killer’s a cop, not a blood spatter analysist for example) so that money doesn’t have to be paid to Jeff Lindsay, the book’s author and then turned it into a film. It’s due out about the same time as the new series of Dexter is in the US and I think I know which one I’ll be watching.
Speaking of Dexter, I finished the third book the other day after nearly 10 months of owning it. It was a good read but very unlike the style of the past two, which is what put me off reading it to begin with I think but now that it’s out of the way I can begin to look forward to the next one, which is due out in February sometime.
Ok, so the other film I watched was the sequel to Lost Boys, Lost Boys: The Tribe. As a sequel it sucked. There were some things they’d kept from the last film, including a chunk of dialogue that seemed to be word-for-word perfect, as if that was somehow going to tie it in with the last film. Ok, it did but it was about the only thing that did bar a brief mention of the protagonists’ surnames (Emerson, like in the original) and of course the return of Edgar Frog. I’ve already mentioned in a past blog somewhere about how he hasn’t changed in appearance and this is still true but there’s something unsettling about hearing the low, husky voice he has now coming out of that body.
As a stand alone film it’s not too bad but they’ve changed one too many things about it so that it follows on from the original. Last time I checked vampires couldn’t move objects using telekinesis and then they stab each other for fun? Well that’s just silly. Oh, and why was the head vampire wearing clothes that made him look like a vampire? That was totally out of character from the original ones.
Judging it not as a sequel to one of my all-time favourite films, I felt it lacked any kind of an ending. There was no interesting twist, no big revelation, nothing. In fact, it’s a good job Corey Feldman agreed to reprise his role as Edgar Frog otherwise this film would just be another run-of-the-mill, uninteresting vampire flick. Ho hum.
