My knee’s screwed but I don’t care - I am so seeing this gig.
Ok, rewind to the beginning.
I’ve come home from town to find my Eureka Machines album waiting for me on the kitchen and so then I obviously go and listen to it. At the same time I wonder if they’re playing locally any time soon, what with them being a local band and such so I head to their MySpace profile and find out that they’re playing at Rios on the 12th December supporting The Glitterati. Already I want to go. I head to the venue website where it tells me that tickets are a measly £6 and as well as that, the second support band is High Society. Wild dogs can’t keep me away now.
I also find out from the venue website that the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies are playing the night I’m seeing Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People in London. Damn. Spose it’s not the end of the world - I only like them when they’re doing swing music anyway.
Back to the glam-fest that’s inevitably going to happen for me.
Let’s start with the first support band, High Society. This band was formed after King Adora split up by half of King Adora’s members. Now I love King Adora (to an extent - didn’t think much of the second album…) and got to see them live too at Fibbers in York and well, if you like a glam-punk racket then they are the band for you. Unsurprisingly High Society sound very similar to King Adora so I’m hoping they should be as fun to witness live as King Adora were too.
As I mentioned earlier, I received second support band, The Eureka Machines’ album today, which was purely bought on the strength of seeing an acoustic performance of theirs supporting Ginger. The fact that it’s failed to disappoint after just that says a lot about them I think. Granted they seem to be the odd band out with them not wearing super-tight jeans but a good band is a good band no matter what they wear.
The Glitterati I think I last saw in 2005 supporting Young Heart Attack but that’s irrelevant because in some weird twist of fate I first saw them supporting King Adora - how the tables have turned - at that gig at Fibbers I mentioned earlier and was just instantly hooked. It’s gonna be interesting to see them command a room as the headline act as I’ve only ever seen them supporting or as part of a festival lineup.
It’s stupid. I haven’t been excited for a music gig in so long - not even the likes of Less Than Jake, who used to be my favourite band at one point, have made me feel like I have to be at a gig but three small bands come along in a relatively small venue and it’s suddenly one of the things I’m most looking forward to this winter.
It’ll be a brilliant show though.
